Maybe it would be good for them, but they will forever be longing for another hit of that sweet, sweet Azeroth success. When people in comment threads glibly declare that Blizz should just give up on WoW, I see that as akin to suggesting a long term addict should just give up on heroine. And, even now, in decline, WoW is worth a third to a half of that annually. What do you do when your company suddenly has a subscription MMORPG that peaks out at 12 million players… 12 million subscribers… world wide and is brings in more than a billion dollars annually? That is a company changing moment. Blizzard was already a successful video game developer with a string of popular titles in its history, but WoW… that was a next level event. Yes, there was a time when it felt that way, maybe a five year stretch after its launch where the company seems to spend a lot of its time just coming to grips with the runaway success that was early WoW. Blizzard is, after all, not all about World of Warcraft.
But I can always go back and post about how I changed my mind!Īnyway, on to BlizzCon 2023 and other titles.
